Tysup Ties Up The Alabama Futurity. This was a good win for the
Byrds, said trainer Ray Robbins. They had a nice colt two years ago who
fractured and last year they had a filly out of A Timetodash who broke
her ankles. Tysup seems to have broken their bad streak of luck with A
Timetodash foals.
A Timetodash was kind of crazy and didn't go to the track, but she
produced some speed. Unfortunately, she had one baby on the ground this year and
they had just bred her back when she colicked and died. They needed
this win to pick them up.
Tysup (Quick To Flare Up-A Timetodash, Dashing Encounter) beat out
favored Eye Ballin to take the $77,165 Alabama Bred Futurity by a length on
April 29 at Delta Downs. The two-year-old colt had only one out prior to the
Futurity. He won his trial heat by 3/4-length in his first official
out.
Alvin Bubba Brossette guided the gray colt into the eight-hole for the
finals as Robbins watched his only entry in the race. The colt broke
behind in fifth and was still in the middle of the pack as they headed into the
stretch. That's when he shifted into passing gear to take the 330-yard
event in :17.16 for an 85 speed index.Owner and breeder Gary Lane Byrd
accepted a $34,724 paycheck for the win. Tysup now has $36,524 in earnings
with a 2-0-0 record from two.
This is a real nice colt to handle and be around, said Robbins. They
list him as a gray but he's really jet black with a few white hairs in his
flank and tail. He's on the small side, but very well built. I think he looks
a lot like his daddy. No one really thinks about him being a stud because
he's so well behaved. He doesn't give anyone any problems or make a lot
of noise. He's just interested in what's going on and curious about
things. His groom caught him peeping through some boards so he could watch her
and nicknamed him Peepsie. It kind of stuck and now everyone calls him
that. He's a very friendly, nice colt to handle. He tries to do things right
and wants to run. His daddy also had that kind of personality. He was a
good horse to handle.
Tysup is out of A Timetodash who has four foals of racing age. All four
are starters with Tysup being her number one runner.
Finishing second was Eye Ballin (Mr Eye Opener-Special Rockette) owned
by Jerry Carpenter, trained by Heath Taylor and ridden by Gilbert Ortiz. In
third was Strike By Yawl (The Bayou Breeze-Ms Strawberry Twist) owned by
Stephen Lee, trained by Danny Eldridge and ridden by Alfonso Lujan.
The remaining order of finish was Royal Quick Mama (Royal Quick
Rocket-Beduinos Show Off), CS Zoomer (Shazoom-Watch My Baby), Okie
Shawnee (Okey Dokey Dale-Disco Bugs Bally), Tequila Shake (Royal Shake Em-Merri
Smash), Royal Fancy Dreamer (Royal Quick Rocket-Double DS) and Biduino

Alabama Derby-RG3
Striking Black Gold In The Winner's Circle
Striking Black Gold (Willie Wicked-Funistrada, Zevi TB) went into the
$37,300 Alabama Bred Derby as the odds-on favorite. The three-year-old
gelding won his trial heat to the Derby on April 15 by a substantial 1
1/2-length margin. He came back ready to run on April 29 as Tami Purcell
guided him into the seven-hole at Delta Downs. Striking Black Gold broke
sixth in the ten-horse field. He was still lagging behind in fourth at
the first call, but was 1/2-length out as they topped the stretch. His lead
improved to a full length at the line where he clocked out at :20.15.
That time was good enough for an 88 speed index at 400-yards. He earned
$16,785 for the win, which brings his career tally to $41,367 with a 5-3-1
record from thirteen.
Striking Black Gold was joined in the winnerıs circle by owner Sheri Loy
who recently purchased the gelding from trainer Ray Robbins.
Black Gold should have done better last year, but he just had a lot of
problems, said trainer Ray Robbins. I got him for a training bill and
decided to run him. He won his trial heat to the Alabama Bred Derby and
Sheri (owner Sheri Loy) thought she'd like to have him so I sold him.
I had three horses qualified to the Derby, including one of my own. It
was a good weekend.
Striking Black Gold was bred by Walter Chaney and is out of the Zevi
(TB)mare Funistrada, who has four foals of racing age with two starters. Her
top winner is Striking Black Gold.
Finishing second was Quick Bubba Ray (Quick To Flare Up-Miss Streaking

Alabama Stallion Stakes Winner
Strike By Yawl Breaks Maiden
Strike By Yawl made his first start in the trials to the Alabama Bred
Futurity-RG3. The gray gelding finished second in his heat, qualified,
and was third in the finals. He stepped into the four-hole for his third
career start in the 330-yard $15,000 Alabama Stallion Stakes for two-year-old
Alabama Breds on May 20.
Strike By Yawl was called third from the gates under jockey Alfonso
Lujan, with Royal Quick Mama stepping out on the lead and showing early speed.
Strike By Yawl stalked Royal Quick Mama in a fierce battle, but Strike
By Yawl overtook the filly in the final strides for a 1/2-length victory in
:17.278.
The clocking earned the gelding a career-best 81 speed index and his
first step into the winner's circle was worth $7,200, which raises his
bank roll to $15,516. His race record is now 1(1)-1-1(1) from three starts.
Strike By Yawl is leased by Stephen Harwell Lee of Pelham, Alabama,
while Mike Sealy's Striking Hoof Beats is the breeder/owner/lessor. Strike By
Yawl, who is conditioned by Danny Eldridge, is now the first stakes
winner from only 18 starters sired by The Bayou Breeze. He is one of four
starters and the first stakes winner out of the Hear The Band mare Ms Strawberry
Twist, a winner of seven races and finalist in the Grade 3 Ruidoso
Sprint Stakes.
In second was Royal Quick Mama (Royal Quick Rocket-Beduinos Show Off)
